About Our Funeral Homes

Since our founding, the guiding principle of Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals has been the commitment to treating each family who comes to us as our own. With sincerity, pride, and dedication, we are committed to this time-honored tradition.

Here is some history on how the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals has flourished throughout the years.

Tim Ryan started his funeral service career as an intern at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Director’s of Trenton & Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Our Uncle, John J. Ryan, entered the funeral business in 1947 with a funeral home in Monmouth County, N.J., planting the seeds for the Ryan Funeral Homes in Toms River, NJ. Mr. Ryan then went on to serve the remainder of his internship with his uncle Jack, at the John J. Ryan Home for Funerals. In 1973, Mr. Ryan began working for Colonial Funeral Homes which, at the time, was opening a new branch and the owner, asked Ryan to manage it. He did. Ten years later, in 1984 Ryan purchased the Lavallette and Seaside Park locations.

Growing Our Funeral Homes

In the late 1980s, Ryan knew that if he was going to compete with other funeral homes in Toms River, NJ, he had to grow. That is when he made the decision to expand. And the key to his successful growth: “I saw what was happening in Ocean County with the retirement villages so I decided to expand onto St. Catherine Blvd.” In 1988 the St. Catherine Blvd. location was designed and built.

Ryan's next purchase became the Fischer Blvd. location and soon after our Bayville location, the O’Connell Funeral Home. Ryan purchased the funeral home and returned it to family ownership. That location is now called the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals – O’Connell Chapel.

As the county grew and the retirement community grew, Ryan’s business also grew. He purchased the DeBow Funeral Home in Jackson, N.J. “I went to Jackson because I saw the growth." From humble beginnings the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals can now boast to being the largest family owned firm in New Jersey with six locations in Ocean County.

In recent years, we’ve gathered together a staff of highly-qualified and deeply caring individuals to assist us in continuing our family funeral home's mission of providing excellence in service to families in their time of need.
