Obituary for Fr. Christopher Balas, OFMConv.

FRIAR CHRISTOPHER BALAS, OFMConv. Fr. Christopher Balas, OFMConv. died peacefully at St. Catharine's Friary in Seaside Park, NJ on April 28, 2012 after a long illness. Born in Trenton, NJ, he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes Powers Balas. He is survived by his sister, Sister Ruth Ann Balas, RSM of Plainfield, NJ. He was the brother of the late John Michael Balas. Fr. Christopher was professed as a Conventual Franciscan Friar on September 16, 1951, Middleburg, NY; he was solemnly professed on September 17, 1954, Rensselaer, NY and was ordained to the priesthood on November 30, 1957 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany, NY. In 1955, Fr. Christopher volunteered for the Brazilian Missions where he completed his theological studies. After ordination he returned to Brazil and served at several different apostolates for more than twenty-five years. Upon his return to the United States, he served in Wilmington, NC; St. Augustine, FL; Trenton, NJ; Staten Island, NY; Chaplain for the Sisters of Mercy, N. Plainfield, NJ. At the time of his death he was in residence at St. Catharine Friary, Seaside Park, NJ. A wake will be held at St. Catharine Church, 50 E Street, Seaside Park, on Wednesday, May 2nd from 9AM to 11AM followed by a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM. Interment will be in the Friars' Plot in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Trenton, NJ. The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Ave, Seaside Park is in charge of the arrangements.
