American Veteran 01

Albert R. Hughes

May 15, 1940 ~ December 29, 2021 (age 81)

Albert R. Hughes, 81, of Berkeley Twsp., NJ, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.  He was born in Manhattan, NY but resided in Staten Island for most of his life until moving to Toms River, NJ over 20 years ago.  Al proudly served his country in the United States Army before establishing a career as a Fire Fighter for the New York City Fire Department.  He was stationed in the lower east side of Manhattan at “Fort Pitt” for most of his firefighting career and served his remaining years in Tottenville, Staten Island which is affectionately known as “Southern Comfort”.  Big Al, as many of his friends knew him, loved being a fireman and would often joke that “if you love your job, you never have to work a day in your life.”

For the last 50 years, he summered in Ellenville, NY at Leurenkill Heights, a bungalow colony in the Catskills purchased by a group of mostly firemen who wanted a place for their families to enjoy in the country.  Al loved spending time on “the Hill”.  Whether it was fishing, golfing or just hanging with his friends in the “Casino”, Leurenkill was his happy place.

Al is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years Dorothy “Dot” Hughes, his parents Charles and Clara (Hawthorne) Hughes, as well as his brothers: Raymond and Charles Hughes. He will be forever missed by his loving family: his daughter Laura and her husband Bill Hughes of Westfield, NJ, sons Stephen and his wife Dawn Hughes of Union, NJ, Brian and his wife Andrea Hughes of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Kenneth Hughes of Texas, his sister Elaine Falvey of Staten Island, and his five loving grandchildren: Patrick, Chelsea, Liam, Julianna, and Natalie Hughes.

Big Al will be missed by all: his FDNY brothers, his Leurenkill family, his American Legion buddies, his Vero Beach Elk brethren, and his many nieces and nephews.
