Charles "Buddy" G. Flanagan Obituary

Charles G. Flanagan, 91, of Toms River, NJ, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024.

A lifelong New Jersey resident, Charles, better known as Buddy, was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Newark to the late Charles and Cecilia Flanagan.  He grew up in a close-knit family in Bloomfield with two brothers, a sister and many cousins.  Buddy attended Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, served as an altar boy at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Bloomfield and learned the importance of hard work as a young newspaper carrier for The Newark Evening News.

Buddy served his country honorably in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War.  Upon his return, he worked at the Hampton Roofing Company in Newark and later at the Pittsburg Plate Glass Company in Belleville.  Buddy built many lasting friendships through the years and upon retirement, he and several of his closest friends moved to the Jersey Shore.

Eventually, Buddy settled at Chadwick Beach Island in Lavallette with long-time friend Harry Johanson.   They loved life on the water at their bay front home, feeding the ducks and seagulls and enjoying spectacular sunsets from their deck.  Buddy became a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Seaside Heights and donated his time to the Knights of Columbus #8415, participating in fundraisers and community events.  Buddy purchased a boat and named it “After Five,” fulfilling his dream to explore the water and share that life with family and friends.  Generous hosts, Buddy and Harry threw fun family parties, made fantastic meals, and gathered friends for a spirited game of dominoes.  They also enjoyed visiting the Atlantic City casinos and the arcades at the Seaside Heights boardwalk, often winning a stuffed animal for a grandniece or grandnephew.

Buddy is predeceased by his parents; brother, Eugene Flanagan; sister-in-law, Florence Flanagan; friend, Harry Johanson; friend, Sr. Maureen Rude and beloved dog, Tara.

Buddy is survived by his brother, Peter Flanagan of Margate, NJ; sister, Sr. Cecilia Flanagan of Chatham, NJ; and sister-in-law, Bette Flanagan of Darien, CT.  He also leaves behind nieces and nephews:  Maureen Flanagan, Susan Zerull (Brent), James Flanagan (Diana), Sharon McGuire (Noel), Steven Flanagan (Kristina) and Scott Flanagan, as well as grandnieces and nephews: Colin McGuire, Jack Flanagan, Carter Flanagan, Elizabeth Flanagan, Kylie Flanagan, Cooper Flanagan and Connor Flanagan.

Buddy was a sweet and sentimental man who loved to tell stories and silly jokes, always ending a quip with his signature ba dum bum.  He was very loved and will be dearly missed.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, from 1 pm to 4 pm with a Catholic service to begin at 3 pm at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Hwy 35 North, Lavallette, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to favorite charities be made in memory of Charles G. Flanagan.
