John Patrick Sweeney, 67, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 17th. A proud graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, John’s life was filled with passion for family, food, and very good friends. Sundays were sacred to John, spent at the beach riding the waves and preparing meals to gather the people he cared about most. Known for his unwavering determination and unmistakable charm, he lived life on his own terms whether anyone liked it or not. He was a devoted father to five children whom he loved deeply and uniquely: Anna Sweeney (Salvador Sanchez), Caroline Brittain (Chris Brittain), Laura Longhi (Ludovico Longhi), Kristie Sweeney (Myles Stolier), and Hugh Sweeney (Anna Nedashkiva). His greatest joys were his four grandchildren—Charlie, Rosalita, Nora, and Levi—whom he lovingly teased and spoiled beyond measure.
John is survived by his beloved mother, Patricia Sweeney (Gunning), and his siblings: Kate (Fifi), Joe (Robin), Eileen, Bob (Jan), Maureen, and his many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, John, and his brother, Jimmy (Leigh). John lived by the Irish motto- there are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet. He was a big kid at heart, a ruthless entrepreneur, a prolific storyteller, and was never offended by the offer of a stiff cocktail. A lifelong Bruce Springsteen fan, John attended over 250 concerts. He famously dashed across the stage during a show in the '70s, and, just as The Boss sings, he truly was "born to run."
John notoriously ended up on the “naughty list” every Christmas, and he proudly received coal from Santa each year. However, his unwavering generosity and devotion as a loving son, father, and grandfather ensured he was always at the very top of his family’s "nice list." Known for his mischievous personality, he followed the Sweeney house motto: if you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun. John, you will be so very missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 21st, from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Route 35 North, Lavallette, NJ 08735, concluding with a traditional Irish bagpiping procession. John was a lifelong supporter of fighting food insecurity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to the Ocean County College Helping Hands Food Pantry (go.ocean.edu/donate please select “Helping Hands Food Pantry” from the drop-down menu.)
The family warmly invites you to share your memories of John or recount the anecdotes he loved to tell, keeping his spirit alive through the stories that brought so much joy to those around him.
