John A. Vergari

John A. Vergari, 97, of Lavallette, NJ passed away on Monday September 22, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Home in Cherry Hill, NJ John was born December 22,1927 in Yonkers, NY he had lived in Mohegan Lake, NY before moving to Lavallette, NJ. John graduated from NYU in 1949. He played varsity football for NYU from 45’ through 48’. Their home field was Yankee stadium. He received a masters degree in education from Columbia.

John proudly served his country in the US Army 3rd Calvary Regiment from 1953-1955. He was a tank commander in the testing and development of Atomic Artillery in Desert Rock, Arizona. He also served in the Korean War. He was an Industrial Arts teacher with the Lakeland School System in New York for many years where he also served as a football coach throughout his teaching career.

John was a parishioner of St. Pio of Pietrelcina RC Church in Lavallette, NJ where he was very active serving as a Usher and a member of the Holy Name Society.

Preceded in death by his wife Mary (Sabatini). Surviving is his son; John Jr and his wife Barbara of Cherry Hill, NJ, and his three daughters; Teresa Proule of Bridgewater, MA, Regina Albano of Hellertown, PA, and Susan Cuneo and her husband John of Putnam Valley, NY. He is survived by seven grandchildren: John and Michael Vergari, Jason and Kristopher Proule, Nicholas and Juliana Albano, and Casey Wittner. Also survived by nine great grandchildren.

John took great pleasure in having his grandchildren spending extensive time in the summer in Lavallette. He logged many, many miles attending his grandchildren’s youth sports and subsequent high school and college football games. John was an avid poker player and enjoyed a regular game in Lavallette for many years with his poker buddies. In 2017 he published a book “Wild Poker”

Family will receive friends and family on Sunday September 28, 2025 from 3pm to 5pm at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 706 Grand Central Ave., Lavallette, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday September 29, 2025. 10am St. Pio of Pietrelcina RC Church, Lavallette, NJ. Committal will be private. Donation may be made to Tunnels to Towers https://t2t.org/
