Lucy O'Grady Obituary

Lucy (Honey) E. O'Grady (nee Nanstiel) passed away at home on Friday, October 9, 2020 after a brief illness. Lucy was born to the late Arthur A. and Anna B (nee Sterner) Nanstiel on August 16, 1922. As an adult, Lucy applied for a copy of her birth certificate and discovered that the date of birth with Vital Statistics was shown as August 17, 1922.

Lucy grew up in White Haven, PA and resided there until graduating from Foster Township High School in June of 1941. She then moved with her family to Elizabeth, NJ.

Lucy married her late husband, Walter V. O'Grady Sr. in June of 1944 in Elizabeth, NJ, where they raised their four children, Walter Jr., Cheryl, Daniel and Raymond. The couple lived in Elizabeth until 1976 when they moved to Silver Ridge Park West in Berkeley Township, NJ.

Lucy was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Elizabeth and St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Berkeley Township.

Lucy was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of 54 years, Walter V. O'Grady, Sr., her parents, Arthur A. and Anna B. Nanstiel, her four brothers, Charles (Adam), James, Edward H. and Samuel P., her sisters, Margaret R. Mengle and Martha A. Mileski, and her daughter-in-law, Amy (wife of Raymond). Lucy is survived by her daughter, Cheryl A., who lived with her and her son, Raymond T. of Lakewood. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, all holding a very special place in her heart.

Lucy had composed her own obituary, but her children would like to add a few words of their own since she would never praise herself. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was a selfless woman who always put everyone before herself. She was a gentle rock who we could always count on. We will cherish forever the wonderful memories she created for her family. She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

Her children would also like to thank her primary care physician, Dr. Gregory Cuozzo and his staff (Joan and Andrea) for the care she has received over the years and the nurses and aides of VNA of Central Jersey for the care they provided. They would also like to thank Father Carlos of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church for bringing much appreciated comfort and healing with his spiritual visit.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday 4:00pm – 8:00pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday 12:00pm at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp. Immediately following the Mass, Lucy will be laid to rest with her husband, Walter, at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, should you wish, donations to the VNA of Central Jersey Home and Hospice Care would be welcomed.
