Mark Anthony Montecalvo, Sr., 84, of Marlboro, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, surrounded by his devoted son Mark Jr., daughter-in-law Michele (Meservie), and his twin grandsons, Salvatore and Vincenzo. He took his last breath moments after the Yankees won the game.
Born on June 6th, 1941 and raised in Jersey City, NJ, he also resided in Kearny, Bayonne, Red Bank, and Toms River. He spent the last six months of his life in Marlboro, NJ, on hospice under the care of his loving son and family.
Mark was predeceased by his loving wife, Janet (née Terriogo); his parents, Mark and Anna (née LaBruno) Montecalvo Tedeschi; and his brother, Richard Montecalvo (wife Linda). Mark lost his childhood best friend, Anthony Viggiano (wife Kathy), to cancer more than 40 years ago, yet he always kept his memory alive. Reunited once again, they will continue their many antics and reminisce together. Mark will continue to watch over his beloved goddaughter and niece, Tara Viggiano.
He was always a wonderful son, dedicated husband, mentoring father, generous uncle, supportive godfather, loving father-in-law, and doting grandfather. He was the type of man who always did the right thing, even when no one was looking.
A graduate of Ferris High School in Jersey City, he was propelled into the workforce after the death of his father. He worked diligently to care for his mother and continuously advance his abilities. He was a dedicated, high-ranking employee at AIG (American International Group) for many decades. He primarily worked as a Marine Claims Adjuster, evaluating and processing insurance claims involving maritime incidents such as cargo damage, vessel collisions, and pollution. He was exceptionally good at his job and was offered many opportunities throughout his career. He had a particular talent for managing money, numbers, and accounting.
Mark was a voracious reader and scholar. He often read several books at one time - one on the bus to and from work, one at work for his lunch break, and one or two at home. He had a massive book collection and inspired a love of reading in his son Mark and grandsons. To the amazement of his family, he read at least four books a week for many years.
He was an avid bowler, having bowled at almost every bowling alley in the tri-state area. He loved the camaraderie of his bowling teams and took the sport seriously. He was recognized twice for having a perfect bowling score of 300 by the American Bowling Congress.
He enjoyed playing baseball in his youth and loved watching the sport throughout his life. He was an avid Yankees fan, having watched them faithfully for many years. In one of his last conversations, he asked “Did the Yankees win?”
As a father and grandfather, Mark exemplified strength, dedication, wisdom, and integrity, instilling those same values - along with a strong sense of purpose, understanding, and love - in his family. He took great pride in witnessing their successes and supported them through life’s inevitable challenges.
Mark was extremely grateful to his caregivers at the end of his life; his son Mark, his doting grandsons, his daughter-in-law Michele, his niece Carol Buscio who always made his favorite scrumptious Rice Crispy Treats, the hospice staff at Ocean and Monmouth County Visiting Nurse Association Health Group (VNA), and the staff at Senior Helpers of Manalpan particularly Monica Smith, Shamel Martin, and Andrea Albert. They upheld his dignity while his body was frail and suffering. The family appreciates and acknowledges their compassion.
Mark Sr. was cared for deeply by the family pets; the cats, particularly Graham who rested on his feet daily, S’more who consistently rested underneath his hospital bed, and Hunter the dog, who kept a diligent and watchful eye at all times.
He leaves behind many friends, neighbors, cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he loved deeply and respected greatly. Mark will be remembered for his strong work ethic, devotion to family, and the gentle kindness and warmth he shared with everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mark’s memory to the Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ 07724, or online at monmouthcountyspca.org.
The family welcomes relatives and friends on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Boulevard, Toms River, NJ.
He will be cremated and taken on many adventures with his grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on what would have been his 85th birthday, Saturday, June 6th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gabriel Chapel, 549 Route 520 Newman Springs Road, Marlboro, NJ.
Following the Mass, in honor of his 85th birthday, the family invites everyone to join them for bowling to celebrate his amazing life. Please speak directly with the family to RSVP.
