Mary “Mary Jo” Romano (nee Barrett), 77, of Toms River, NJ, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024. 

Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, Mary Jo was a 1964 graduate of St. Joseph High School, Paterson, NJ. She worked as a secretary in Paterson for several years before marrying her husband Lawrence Romano. Together, they lived in Pompton Lakes, NJ and then in Huntsville AL  before finally settling  in Toms River 52 years ago.  Mary Jo was very proud of her Irish Heritage.  She was a parishioner of St. Justin the Martyr RC Church, Toms River and a former member of St. Therese RC Church, Paterson, NJ.  She was an avid reader and loved sports, especially the New York Yankees and New York Jets.   Mary Jo was also a huge Neil Diamond fan.  Mary Jo was known  for hosting several large parties every year; most famously Christmas Eve, Memorial Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. 

She was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Josephine Barrett, her sister Catherine Marhevka, her brother Raymond Barrett, her niece  Nicole Trapanese, and her nephew Raymond Barrett 

Mary Jo is survived by her husband of 55 years Lawrence P. Romano, Sr., her son Lawrence P. Romano, Jr. of Toms River, a brother Martin Barrett of Berthoud, CO, a sister in law Evelyn Romano of Butler, NJ, five nieces Kelly Barrett, Kimberly Barrett, Laurissa Norwick, Alisa Scullin, and Victoria Hannon,  two nephews Richard Trapanese and  Robert Barrett, several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.  Mary Jo had many close friends and deeply touched the lives of all who knew her. 

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, April 7, 2024 4:00pm – 7:00pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 995 Fischer Blvd., Toms River.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, April 8, 2024 9:30am at St. Justin the Martyr RC Church, Toms River.  Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.
