With deep love, we announce the passing of S. James (Big Jim) Brady, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who passed away on May 10, 2026. S. James was born on May 2, 1931, in Elizabeth, NJ to Richard F. and Anna Cecilia (Sheehan) Brady.
Jim graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in 1949 and served in the Navy from 1951-1955. He married Ethel Riker on July 17, 1954, and together they raised their family of four in Garwood, NJ, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and happiness.
Jim was active in his church, the Knights of Columbus organization and community groups. He built a meaningful career as a life insurance salesman. Jim was known for his devotion to his faith and family. He enjoyed traveling, working in his yard, attending family events, and making people laugh.
Jim taught his family Christian values and will be remembered for his welcoming spirit, deep kindness, and the meaningful influence he had on his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Jim had a zest for life and brought joy and laughter to everyone he met. Those who knew Jim will remember his humor, energy, singing songs, warm embrace, and love for life and family.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Ethel (Riker) Brady, daughter Lynda and husband Robert McCarrick, daughter Marianne and husband Edward English, son Michael and wife Libby (Gutman), and son Joseph. Jim treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchild, bringing laughter, love, joy and cherished memories as a devoted Grandpa/PopPop.
Jim built a life grounded in faith, family, hard work, and stewardship to his church and community. His family will carry his memory forward through the lessons, stories, and love Jim gave so generously.
A wake will be held at Timothy Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd, Toms River, NJ on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Sunday, 2:00 pm-6:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 10:00 am at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church 685 Hooper Ave. Toms River, NJ.
