Thomas Mack Obituary

Thomas P. Mack, Sr. (85) Lavallette NJ

Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather, Thomas P. Mack, Sr. (85) passed away peacefully on Monday June 29, 2020 in Lavallette surrounded by his family.

He was born on June 20, 1935 to Thomas and Mary (Montone) in Newark NJ – but considered Belleville his hometown. He transferred from Barringer High School to Belleville High his junior year, where he was a varsity athlete in cross-country, baseball and basketball and met the love of his life, a cheerleader, Marilyn Teuscher. Tom helped lead the Belleville basketball team to their final Group 4 Section 2 State Championship.

His achievements in basketball continued into college where he scored over 1,000 points and was inducted into the Bloomfield College of NJ Hall of Fame. Tom graduated from Bloomfield College with a degree in business and was an active member of the Army Reserves.

Tom was an industrial engineer and the Assistant Plant Manager for the Andrew Jergens Company in Belleville. His hard work ethic led him to become the Director of Operations, Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, Newark, NJ, before retiring in 2003.

Tom loved the beach and spent his summers and retirement at the Jersey shore, hosting family barbecues, fishing and crabbing at the Lavallette dock with his grandchildren. Tom and Marilyn spent their winters in Ft. Myers, FL where they spent time with their close group of friends and attended the Naples-Ft. Myers Greyhound track together.

He enjoyed nothing more than being with his family and listening to a ballgame in the sun (called by John Sterling). He was a die-hard Yankee and NY Giants fan. Among his favorite things in life were the Monmouth Park Racetrack, westerns and game shows, Moonstruck, lottery tickets, a pot of crab gravy (with his cousins), hot dogs from Rutt’s Hut and his beloved Star Tavern pizza. Tom was undeniably big hearted and truly had a one-of-a-kind personality.

A member of Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Belleville, Tom was known for his many charitable contributions and civic duties for the town. Tom was also an active member of the Belleville Varsity Club for many years.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary. He is survived by his dedicated wife, high school sweetheart and partner of 62 years, Marilyn; his three sons, Jeffrey and his wife Denise of Barnegat NJ, Thomas Jr. and his wife Maureen of Ridgewood NJ, Craig of Lavallette NJ; And 9 grandchildren: JT, Tommy, Ryan, Kaitlyn (and husband Joe) Karlee, Kyle, Connor, Patrick and Camryn who will miss him dearly. Tom will also be deeply missed by his large extended family of cousins.
